Appalachian melodies are often played against drone strings as demonstrated in “Reuben.” Julie Lyonn Lieberman was attracted to the slide technique used within the tune because when she’d interviewed Alan Jabbour, founding director of the American Folklife Center in the Library of Congress, he’d demonstrated tunes from Appalachia that had melded with techniques from the enslaved blues fiddlers who, after emancipation, performed in many styles within string bands as well as with blues singers. The slides in this tune can be found on early blues fiddle recordings.
