As the Irish fiddle tune, “Lady’s Fancy,” migrated West in America, it morphed into the Western Swing style, an offshoot of swing. “Lady’s Fancy” was then renamed “Say Old Man, Can You Play the Fiddle?” Lady’s Fancy uses conventions found in the blues as well as Irish music, such as question and answer or call and response, so the improviser is challenged to form interesting ideas he or she repeats more than once, called a “riff,” in addition to creating back-to-back freshly imagined ideas. This arrangement starts with an Irish version and morphs into a swing style.
