Journey to Bollywood – Violin Part with practice track (level 3.5)

“Journey to Bollywood” uses a scale from India that has the same gap of a minor third (one & 1/2 steps) between two notes in its scale as most of the styles in this program. The melody includes some of the left and right-hand techniques required to play music from that region of the world and features a drone (a held pitch) which is prevalent in the style. Music from India does not include the intricate harmonic ideas we find in Western Canon, but their system incorporates far more types of scales and rhythms than we find in the West. The term “Bollywood,” refers to the meeting between traditional music dating back at least 5,000 years in India with modern ideas. Therefore, the backing track for this piece helps frame the style correctly. The word, “Bollywood,” is a portmanteau (a blend of two words), combining Bombay and Hollywood. The city of Bombay, which is known as Mumbai today, is where the Hindi-language Indian film industry is based. In other words, it’s the Hollywood of India. The practice track was created in a sophisticated multi-track software program using real instruments and provides a wonderful opportunity to explore the style as well as soloing.
